Joshua Bowker from 18 St John Street Chambers successfully prosecuted a possessive boyfriend who inflicted physical and psychological abuse upon his victim.
The Manchester Evening News has reported on the case in which Ian Brewster was jailed for 16 months after being found guilty of controlling or coercive behaviour, plus other charges of assault and criminal damage.
Such behaviour included threatening his girlfriend at knifepoint and smashing up her property if male friends contacted her.
On sentencing, the judge Miss Recorder Samantha Presland, told the defendant: “Over a period of three weeks, you engaged in pretty relentless, violent, coercive and controlling behaviour.” She continued, “You are displaying destructive co-dependent behaviour which is not good for you or for them and it needs to stop.”
