The Lawyer magazine has compiled a list of the leading appeal cases to be heard in 2024. In their words, the list showcases ‘some of the most influential and intriguing disputes hitting the courts’. We are delighted to announce that cases involving three members of 18 St John Street feature in the list.
London International Exhibition Centre -v- Allianz and others was listed as one of The Lawyer’s top 20 cases of 2023. The matters relate to business interruption insurance claims stemming from the Covid-19 response, with the lead Claimant (London International Exhibition Centre (ExCel) being joined by several others, including numerous bars and restaurants.
Last year’s Commercial Court ruling in the claimants’ favour had considerable consequences for insurance companies. It determined that insurers were liable to pay out business interruption costs linked to venues’ use for emergency medical services during the Covid-19 pandemic. The insurance companies involved appealed the ruling.
The hearing, which is set to determine the insurers liability, is to take place in the Court of Appeal in June 2024.
