ALISAN HOGG REPRESENTS FAMILY AT INQUEST TOUCHING THE DEATH OF TEENAGER

31st Jan 2025

Alisan Hogg represents family at an inquest touching the tragic death of a teenager in Wigan.

Alex Crook, aged just 15 years, tragically died by drowning on the 7th September 2023 at Scotsman’s Flash, Wigan. Alisan represented the family at the inquest into his death. She was pleased to secure the Coroner’s agreement to issuing regulation 28 reports (pursuant to the Coroners and Justice Act 2009) to help to prevent future deaths in the area.

Alex went out on a balmy September day to play with his friends at Scotsman’s Flash, a well-known local swimming spot. Alex rapidly found himself out of his depth and in trouble. Valiant attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Alex had not had swimming lessons, a mandatory part of the national curriculum during his primary school years. A verdict of accidental death was recorded. Expeditious action is being taken to ensure that the (at least) three schools in the borough that are still failing to provide mandatory swimming lessons to their primary school children, do so.

It was directed that consideration should be given to installing clear and unambiguous “no unauthorised swimming” signs.  The final aspect of the report addresses the concern that appropriate life-saving rescue equipment is installed where it is most likely to prevent future deaths.

Alisan was instructed on behalf of the family by Slater & Gordon’s Samantha Williams.
